The Human Digestive System

This term we have been learning about the human digestive system.

Mrs Dell made a model and showed us how food travels through our body.

We used a funnel for the mouth, a tube for the the oesophagus, a plastic bag for the stomach and some pantihose for the small and large intestines.

We mushed up some food and pushed it through the digestive system to see how it all works.

We sloshed the food around in the stomach and then squeezed it through the intestines.

Next we worked in groups to research and find out about the different nutrients that our small intestine squeezes out of our food.

We discovered that:

Carbohydrates are the fuel for our body and they give us the energy to grow, play and work. Carbohydrates are in rice, bread, pasta, cereals and potatoes.

Proteins make our bones and muscles grow strong and it helps our skin to repair itself. You get proteins from meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, nuts and beans.

Minerals make us fast and strong. You get minerals from beef, tuna fish, broccoli and potato skins.

Vitamins are good for you becuse they help our brain nd body to grow and stay healthy.Vitamins are in carrots, oranges and lots of other fruits and vegetables.

Fats are a little bit good for you. They help you get some fast energy and keep your blood healthy and they can make your food taste good. When you eat too much fat it can make you unhealthy. Fats are in foods like hamburgers, chips, cakes and lollies.

We have also been growing some delicious vegetables and strawberries in our class garden and they taste great.

We are also doing some cooking in class and we are learning recipes for different ways to eat fruit and veges. It has been a lot of fun mixing, stirring, chopping and of course tasting all the yummy food we have made.
With all our new knowledge we will try our best to make Great Choices about the food we eat.
